Falls Prevention in Community-Dwelling Older Adults: Interventions

About this resource:

Systematic Review

Source: U.S. Preventive Services Task Force

Last Reviewed: June 2024

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends exercise interventions to prevent falls in community-dwelling adults ages 65 years or older who are at increased risk for falls. The USPSTF recommends that clinicians individualize the decision to offer multifactorial interventions to prevent falls to their older adult patients. To determine who is more likely to fall, USPSTF recommends that clinicians consider a person’s age and history of falling, as well as other risk factors like sensory problems, medications that may increase fall risk, hazards at home or work, certain physical aspects of a person’s home or neighborhood, and alcohol or drug use.
