This report states that pain is a public health problem, and it describes the social and economic burden of acute and chronic pain in the United States. The report:

  • Explains the unique challenges around addressing and managing patients’ pain
  • Calls for a cultural change in how pain is understood, measured, and treated
  • Provides a roadmap for achieving that change at the population level

The roadmap includes recommendations for improving pain treatment, clinical training, and pain data collection and reporting.
