Dariush Mozaffarian was appointed as a member of the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness & Nutrition on March 24, 2023, for a 2-year term.
Dr. Mozaffarian is a cardiologist, public health scientist, and Director of the Food is Medicine Institute at Tufts University. He is Dean Emeritus and Jean Mayer Professor at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, Professor of Medicine at Tufts School of Medicine, and attending physician in cardiology at Tufts Medical Center. His work aims to create the science and translation for a food system that’s nutritious, equitable, and sustainable. Mozaffarian has authored more than 500 scientific publications on dietary priorities for obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases, and on evidence-based policy approaches and innovations to reduce diet-related diseases and improve health equity in the United States and globally. Some of his areas of interest include healthy diet patterns, nutritional biomarkers, Food is Medicine interventions in health care, nutrition innovation and entrepreneurship, and food policy. He’s one of the top-cited researchers in medicine globally, and his work has been featured in an array of media outlets. He has also served in numerous advisory roles. Mozaffarian received a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences from Stanford University, a Doctor of Medicine from Columbia University, and a Doctorate in Public Health from Harvard University. Mozaffarian received additional clinical training in internal medicine at Stanford University and in cardiology at the University of Washington. He is married, has 3 children, and actively trains as a Fourth Degree Black Belt in Taekwondo.
