Summary
Cigarette smoking causes cancer and early death. Most adults who smoke cigarettes started before age 18 years, so preventing cigarette smoking in adolescents is key to reducing smoking in adults. Population-level interventions to reduce tobacco use include price increases, mass media campaigns, and smoke-free policies.
