PCSFN Community Leadership Award

The President's Council on Sports, Fitness & Nutrition (PCSFN) Community Leadership Award celebrates leaders who are building more vibrant and thriving communities through sports, physical activity, fitness, and nutrition-related programs. This award honors a group of individuals or organizations (exact number of awardees determined by the Council) working to uplift their communities, contributing to the community’s overall well-being, and supporting all community members’ potential to thrive. The word “community” may refer to an organization, sports league or team, business, city, or community-based group. To stay up to date, sign up for email updates.

Selection Criteria 

Factors considered in the selection process include: 

  • Alignment with the PCSFN mission to promote healthy eating and physical activity for all people, regardless of background or ability 
  • Lived or living experience with demonstrated knowledge and service to the community 
  • Demonstrated impact on the community including evidence of putting community learning into action through novel or innovative means to fill gaps within the community and reach those who aren’t being reached through other efforts 
  • Description of meaningful achievements and consistent success in improving community health and wellbeing 

2024 Community Leadership Awardees

  • Amy Valasek: Dr. Amy Valasek is a leader in pediatric sports medicine, focusing on injury prevention and athlete safety. She is a key advocate for youth fitness and healthy sport participation. 
  • Arden Pala: Arden Pala is a teenage author and philanthropist who uses his platform to promote youth fitness and well-being. His contributions include initiatives aimed at encouraging physical activity among young people. 
  • Center for Healing and Justice through Sport (CHJS): CHJS creates trauma-informed sports programs that use physical activity to heal and empower youth. Their work focuses on fostering mental health and resilience through sports. 
  • Ceres Community Project: Ceres provides organic, nutritious meals to low-income individuals dealing with serious illnesses, particularly through youth-led culinary programs. Their focus is on health equity and community-based nutrition education. 
  • Dare2tri: Dare2tri empowers individuals with physical disabilities through adaptive sports, particularly triathlon training. The organization promotes inclusivity and confidence in athletes of all abilities. 
  • David Waters: David Waters is the CEO of Community Servings, a nonprofit that delivers medically tailored meals to chronically ill individuals. His work addresses the intersection of food insecurity and health care. 
  • DC Central Kitchen & Washington Nationals Philanthropies: This partnership focuses on combating food insecurity and promoting health through nutrition education and job training. Their collaborative efforts support underserved communities in Washington, D.C. 
  • Dions Chicago Dream: Dions Chicago Dream provides fresh food to Chicago’s underserved communities through its Dream Deliveries program. The initiative works to combat food deserts and promote health equity, along with youth mentorship programs.  
  • GENYOUth: GENYOUth empowers students to build healthier schools by promoting physical activity and good nutrition. The organization’s programs help create healthier learning environments nationwide. 
  • i-Tri International: This organization offers accessible triathlon races for individuals of all abilities, particularly focusing on inclusivity for those with physical disabilities. They aim to inspire through endurance sports. 
  • Kaboom: Kaboom is dedicated to ending playspace inequity, ensuring that all children, especially those in underserved communities, have access to safe and engaging places to play. They have built or improved thousands of play spaces across the U.S. 
  • Karma Edwards: Karma Edwards contributes to the Food is Medicine movement, working to improve nutrition and food access for vulnerable populations. She advocates for using food as a tool for health improvement.
  • Michael Cottingham: Dr. Michael Cottingham is an expert in adaptive sports and disability studies, working to increase access to sports for people with disabilities. His research focuses on the social and psychological impacts of adaptive sports. 
  • Rise Above: Rise Above empowers Native American youth through sports and education. The organization uses sports and fitness as tools to foster leadership, health, and academic success. 
  • Sarah Albus: Sarah Albus is a nutrition and fitness advocate who works with community organizations to improve health outcomes through education and physical activity programs. Her initiatives focus on creating sustainable, healthy lifestyles. 
  • Sonya Ottaway: Sonya Ottaway is the founder of Netball America, promoting the sport of netball as a means of improving health and fitness in communities across the U.S. She focuses on inclusivity and international outreach through sports. 
  • Stephen Schirra: Stephen Schirra founded "Around the Worlds Soccer" to provide soccer opportunities and equipment to underserved communities worldwide. His work focuses on using soccer to inspire hope and create global connections. 
  • u-Power: u-Power provides fitness and wellness programming to youth in underserved communities, aiming to foster physical and mental well-being. Their efforts focus on breaking down barriers to fitness access. 
  • Volo Kids Foundation: The Volo Kids Foundation offers free sports programming to children in low-income communities, promoting health, fitness, and social skills through play. Their mission is to create opportunities for all children to engage in physical activity. 
  • Youth Sports Alliance: The Youth Sports Alliance promotes year-round physical activity and sports engagement for young people in Utah, particularly through after-school programs. Their work aims to increase access to sports for youth of all backgrounds.
